The Maltese Cross is a firefighter's badge of honor, signifying that he works in courage, always a laddeer rung away from death. It is a symbol of protection. It is a walk in the valley of evil and good so others will live. The firefighter who wears the cross and the badge is willing to lay down his life for you. And before I can tell my story, the history of deaf firefighters or how to become a deaf firefighter, I have to explain how I got to where I am today and why I need to tell you this narration, but read it like a manual or an instruction book. Because, in spite of my difficult lifetime accomplishements and failures, it was even more so being a deaf man and by no choice having been forced to live preciously between two different worlds. By telling the culminations of it all, the readers can determine if they can do better from my mistakes. Incidently, the names had been changed to protect their identities, but not their ranks, the fire stations or Marion County Fire Rescue. |
